As-salamu alaykum and Ramadan kareem to all as we enter the sixth official day of the month of Ramadan! Ramadan appears as the ninth month of the Islamic Calendar and Muslims worldwide take the time, 29 to 30 days to be exact, to fast, pray, engage in charitable acts, and take a second to contemplate their faith. Last week we asked the Muslim community on Everskies to share their personal experiences with Ramadan or explain what this religious period means for them. After reading every single submission, we want to thank you all for sharing a sacred piece of your lives with us! Unfortunately, we are not able to list everyone’s entry, but the ones we did choose covered the overall themes of every submissions: charity, self-improvement, prayer, family and community bonding, among other things! To further celebrate Ramadan, there will be a background item as well as two outfit sets released in Designer Space inspired by the sunset which traditionally signals the breaking of the quotidian fast.
Here is what Everskies users had to say!
For enchanter, yammy, marve, and zeyneplol, giving back to the less fortunate is a central theme of Ramadan they look forward to participating in every year.
“Ramadan is the time of giving to others and empathy. I enjoy Ramadan because it makes me feel ecstatic. I've felt that feeling the most when I volunteered to give out food during Ramadan.”
“Ramadan means so much to me; it is my time to give back to the community and be grateful for all that I have. My family during Ramadan donates food to the shelter and we help anyone who we see is in need. I love Ramadan so much because 11 months of the year you are blessed with the ability to have a home and food provided, so dedicating 1 month of the year to give back and show your gratefulness is such a beautiful thing.”
“During Ramadan, we fast for only one month every year so that we can better understand how hungry people try to live. In this way, we can understand the plight of the poor and needy people. And we can realize how important it is to help these people.”
“I love when Ramadan comes around, it brings me and my family peace, joy, happiness. We fast from sunrise to sunset so that we can understand people who can't have access to food and water and be thankful for the food we get. We also feel closer to Allah (God). We stay away from sins and pray more :)) It's an important month for all muslims around the world! <3 Personally, I miss the ramadans that I had when I was a child.”
Thriller, aim, con, and ccxc love taking the time to bond with their family members whilst sharing a delicious meal!
“I love Ramadan so much. It brings my family together and we always have such a fun time. We wake up early together, eat together, make food together and then laugh together at Iftar time. We spend a lot more time with each other than we normally do, and that's what I love about Ramadan.”
“For me Ramadan is a time to increase patience & closeness to God. Waking up tired before the sunrises is not an easy task to do especially when you're a tired and grumpy teenager like I am. Yet my family like many others wakes up for suhoor, an early breakfast in preparation for the day’s fast, which helps me to bond with my family and friends! It has always been a great month for me and hopefully for others.”
“Ramadan is special; it is the only time of year where my family gathers around the table to eat together. As the sun begins to set, it signals that it is time to break our fast together. It’s a good and warm feeling knowing everyone has fasted together during the day and can now enjoy a big meal together.”
“Ramadan means alot to me from the quality time with my family watching shows, the times we pray together, to laughing together when we break our fast. It means so much to me to have a religious holiday like this so that I can be closer to God and I really like that it makes me feel happy and proud of myself!”
For fatoumata-, Ramadan is the perfect time to spend time with members of your community or get to know new people in the community you had previously not encountered.
“Ramadan is very special to me. The holiday is overall just about showing your faith and modesty to the person you worship. During ramadan, we fast for 30 days! But not the whole 24 hours lol, we fast from sunrise to sundown, so from 6am to 8pm! Fasting is about seeing what it is like to have no food, or water to see how others feel who don't have the privilege to have these things. And yes, we do eat, from 8pm to about 5:30 am. And to those of you thinking that muslims lose a lot of weight after ramadan, you should see our dinners when we break our fast, lol. At the end of ramadan there is a celebration called Eid al- fitr, mostly known as Eid! On that day we go to the masjid to pray and to show our modesty and faith!! After that, all of the children go to ask the adults for money, since it is a tradition!! They say "Salimafo" (in my language) and the adults give them money; it's literally the cutest thing ever. Where I live, there are a lot of muslims so after we finish up at the masjid, somebody hosts a cookout and everybody goes from the masjid to their house! Sometimes the people are different every year, but sometimes they're the same! But i'm not complaining, the food is really good!! For me, after the cookout, the masjid has another barbeque and all of the children & adults go to socialize, play, talk, and pray (when the time comes)!”
Nouma, leeliaa, @leondre, @a7eena, and Syakila take the opportunity to engage in self-improvement and feeding the soul.
“Ramadan is a significant month for not just me but Muslims all around the world. During Ramadan, I try to get closer to my faith by practicing self-control and self-discipline when fasting. I have empathy for those who are less fortunate than I am. I also get closer with my family during this wonderful month.”
“Ramadan is a time to purify hearts, renew faiths, and increase self-discipline. It is a time for families and friends to gather around and be with our beloved ones. Ramadan is a time to get closer to God and seek forgiveness. It is a blessed month and I am very grateful for it. <3”
“To me, Ramadan is a time where I can purify my soul, refrain from bad habits, and learn to become more patient. My all-time favourite thing about Ramadan is when the long tiring day is finally over and the sun sets down so I can enjoy a wonderful feast with my family and laugh at each other’s stories and jokes.”
“Ramadan to me not only means strengthening your relationship with God but also helps you with discovering more about yourself as a person in ways you may have never thought of before. Ramadan is the best time for one to reflect over their life and reminisce over every moment they have experienced and also be able to prepare themselves for the future that is yet to come so that we can be the best version of ourselves and for ourselves.”
“For me, Ramadan is the month where we Muslims get to do what we were supposed to do on Earth in peace. It is the time when Allah (swt) locks up Shaitan (the Devil) and we get to appreciate what we have and what we don't. For me, personally, Ramadan is when I feel the calmest and the least anxious. I'm more relaxed, content and happy! It's truly a beautiful month. :) Ramadan Mubarak to everyone!! <33”
Lastly, faiery, overrated, and y2kmilo remind us about all the mouthwatering food that awaits everyone at the end of the fasting period!
“I've celebrated with my family since the day I was born. Ramadan has always had an important place in me, where we patiently await the most wonderful dinners (iftar). Also, I am fasting right now and dreaming about iftar and what to eat tonight. (:”
“It's a wonderful way to get along with family and other muslims. I also like helping my mom with the cooking or something and we make a treat at night before eating our last meal so we can fast again.”
@y2kmilo#637286:
“One of my favorite experiences every Ramadan is that we eat out cultural food every day unlike other times! I love my culture + the food of course!”
Once again, we thank you all for your participation in the making of the article! And don't forget to check out Designer Space!
